Essential Skills Walkabout - an interactive introductory activity

This fun and interactive activity introduces learners to the essential skills by helping them to uncover how they use these skills every day!

My Essential Skills

My Essential Skills is a new OSP resource that can be used with individuals to introduce Essential Skills language.


Essential SKills and Work Habits Reference Sheets

These quick reference sheets provide a list of the Essential Skills and work habits in the OSP and their descriptions.

This resource is new and can be helpful to explain Essential Skills and skill levels, as well as work habits, in situations where one does not have access to the videos and resources in the Essential Skills and Work Habits section of the OSP website.

OSP Icons, Stickers, Poster and Bingo Cards
Teachers and trainers can use the OSP icons to help introduce students or participants in job training programs to Essential Skills and work habits.  Highlighting the Essential Skills and work habits that students or participants are demonstrating as they complete classroom activities can help them to:
  • put a name to the skills they already have and plan for further skill development;
  • improve their understanding of the skills and work habits required for success in the workplace;and
  • make school-work connections.

OSP Changing Places Resource – Transfer Your Skills!
This resource introduces students to Essential Skills and helps students understand how these skills are transferable from job to job and sector to sector. The activities will also familiarize students with the format of an Ontario Skills Passport Work Plan.

You may download theses files in MS Word format. This will allow you to customize the activities for use in your classroom.


OSP Job Shadowing Resource
The OSP Job Shadowing Resource activities help students or participants in job training programs understand how workers use their Essential Skills in the workplace.  These resources can be used by any secondary school student participating in “Take Our Kids to Work Day”, students enrolled in the Grade 10 “Discovering the Workplace” course or for other types of job shadowing experiences.

You may download these files in MS Word format. This will allow you to customize the activities for use in your classroom.

 


OSP Job Twinning Resource

Job twinning is a one-on-one observation of a cooperative education student at his or her placement.  Teachers and students in any class can use this resource to guide them through a successful job twinning experience!


OSP Resource for Cooperative Education Teachers

Cooperative education teachers can use this resource during pre-placement or integration classes to help familiarize students with the kinds of tasks workers perform in various occupations.  Click on "Tips for Cooperative Education Teachers" to access a  handout that walks students through the creation of a customized OSP Work Plan.  Students can use the work plan to help initiate a dialogue with their placement supervisors about skills development and then add the completed work plan to their employment portfolios.

OSP Resource for Job Connect
This resource introduces Job Connect career counsellors and job developers to the OSP website and provides step-by-step instructions on how to use the OSP to:
  • support learning of the Essential Skills;
  • help individuals identify the skills they have and plan further skill development;
  • help Job Connect participants build a skills-based rsum and prepare for interviews; and
  • complement the Job Connect Participant Training Plan

Looking for some great activities to help establish a collaborative learning environment at the beginning of the school year?  The Guidelines to Learn By resource helps students make the connection between using the Essential Skills in the workplace and in the classroom to promote personal success.

Skilled Trades Awareness (PDF)
OSP Resource for Grade 8 Language

In this set of activities, students identify misconceptions and myths related to Skilled Trade Workers and get an opportunity to research and prepare a report on a Skilled Trade of their choice.

OSP "Concerts Inc" Resource

“Concerts Inc.” Resource (PDF)
Students use their Essential Skills and work habits to plan an end-of-the-year concert. This resource was developed for use in the Grade 10 Career Studies (GLC2O), Grade 10 Discovering the Workplace (GLD2O) and Grade 11 Marketing: Goods, Services, Events (BMI3C) courses as well as in Job Connect Agencies.  Teachers and facilitators of other courses and programs are encouraged to use the authentic workplace materials for other creative activities.

This resource has been updated to include the OSP Action Plan for Learners, updated Check-Up Tools that offer more self-assessments and a resource specifically for the Arts and Culture SHSM.

 


OSP Resource for use in Career Studies - NEW!

This resource includes the following: an OSP Key Messages chart that outlines how learners, parents, employers and teachers can use the OSP; tips for using the OSP in Career Studies; Putting the OSP into ACTION in Guidance and Career Education (OSCA Today, Fall 2009); OSP Promotional Materials such as the OSP Tracker; and the OSP Action Plan for Learners that provides a user-friendly overview of the different OSP tools and resources that learners can use to assess, build and put their Essential Skills and work habits into action.
