Anthony DiLena Pathways Awards for At- Risk Students

One of the most important CARSO mandates is to provide scholarships to exemplary at-risk students for post-secondary education or vocational training.

Award Criteria

  • Nominated students must be graduating/or have graduated from an accredited public or Catholic secondary school in the province of Ontario in the previous school year.  In the case of the Community Living Pathway, the student is eligible if they have received a Certificate of Accomplishment.
  • Students must be nominated by a classroom teacher and/or a Guidance Counsellor who are not their parents, and the nomination must be signed by the Principal of the Secondary School from which the student has graduated.
  • Students most likely to receive this award should fulfill one or more of the following criteria:

o The student succeeded in school despite having to overcome personal obstacles.

o The student succeeded in school despite having to cope with bullying and/or violence.

o The student succeeded in school despite being socio-economically disadvantaged.

o The student succeeded in school despite having to manage a mental health issue.

o The student succeeded in school despite having to overcome academic challenges

  • Proof must be provided that, as of September 15th, 2012 the student is attending:

o an accredited public or private University or College – nominator must provide confirmation of attendance from the college or university;

o an Apprenticeship – the nominator must provide a document from the supervising journeyperson to confirm the position;

o the World of Work – the nominator must provide a letter from the employer confirming the position;

o a Community Living program in Ontario – the nominator must provide a letter of confirmation of the placement from the placement co-ordinator.

  • One award will be presented for each of the five pathways:  University, College, Apprenticeship, World of Work, and Community Living.  The award will be a $500.00 cheque payable to the student.
  • Students may not be nominated for more than one award per year.
  • Students may receive a CARSO Award only once
  • CARSO Awards are one-time Awards only.  They are not sustainable.
  • Decisions made by the CARSO Board regarding nominations are final.

 

The deadline for the 2012 CARSO awards is October 1, 2012.
